giving my baking stone new life…
i like sanding things.
walls, floors, woodwork - the usual stuff, yes.
but there’s a whole other world of sanding that can go on in the kitchen - true! and exciting!
first up, cutting boards. or, more specifically, the built-in cutting boards we inherited when we moved into our 1961 ranch. the built-in cutting boards are original - and there are three in the kitchen. two look as if they’ve never been used. the third - well, let’s just say i’m pretty sure it was used every single day since 1961 and leave it at that.
at first i was hell-bent on replacing the third cutting board. then my friendly contractor suggested i borrow his sander and see if i could bring it back to life. i’m so glad i followed his advice - within seconds the cutting board was looking like new. after the sanding i rubbed a bit of butcher block oil into it - and it didn’t look a day older than the other built-in boards.
that was when i started to look around for other kitchen items that could use a sanding…and my eyes fell on my baking stone. used & abused and never washed with soap, it was the perfect candidate.
again, after a few seconds of sanding, the stone started to look like it did when i brought it home - sure there were still a few spots here & there from our once-a-week-pizza nights, but the sanding breathed new life into a very much loved piece of kitchen equipment…and it completely eliminated the crazy amount of stinky smoke the baking stone gave off at high temperatures…thank goodness.
and now, for your viewing pleasure, i give you this. enjoy!
