sprinklefingers confession time: i have eaten at this restaurant FIVE times in the last FOUR weeks. lunch and dinner. dinner and lunch. jambon sandwiches, duck confit, terrine of pork, bonbons de la maison, champagne - you name it, i’ve eaten it. and then i’ve eaten some more of it. and the sad part is - i can’t wait to go back. seriously. [further confession time: i organized a...
an (over)stocked kitchen
the guardian is full of some great stuff right now! first a list of the handiest kitchen tips and now this: an amazing list (with great descriptions) of kitchen gadgetry from across the pond (what in the world is a pacojet?) - some are useful and some simply wish they were useful. but all in all, fascinating reading…especially the toaster that also poaches eggs! (what?)

cookie jamboree
oh man. just what i needed this morning: a game involving girl scout cookies. as an accompaniment to their story detailing the girl scout’s decision to only offer six flavors of cookies this year, the wall street journal put together a nifty interactive to test your ability to identify girl scout cookies. [i love that someone actually had to create this as part of their job. seriously....

english muffins made me cry
lately i’m taking great comfort in the wise words of julia child. says she: learn from your mistakes, be fearless, and above all have fun! normally i can take a kitchen screw-up in stride. i never think, “oh man. i just wasted a pound of butter.” or, “crap. i just used an entire vanilla bean and for what?!” if things don’t turn out, i usually chalk it up to...

perfect orange marmalade
i spend a lot of time in the kitchen, but working my way to perfect marmalade isn’t something i have time for (at least right now.) thankfully the guardian’s felicity cloake did all the work for us - researching and marmalading her way through several recipes to come up with what she feels is the perfect recipe.
read all about it here. if those recipes don’t do it for you, check...

damn damn damn damn
yesterday i roasted justenough squash for the squash tart filling i was planning on experimenting with today. and what bleeping happens? my husband comes home late, after i’m already in bed, and somehow chokes down the completely plain bowl of squash i had stored in the fridge. i love doing something for nothing. sometimes being married to someone who (literally) eats everything in sight is...

necessary information
i’ve just finished reading julia child’s my life in france. it’s a delightful, inspiring read - she doesn’t take herself too seriously, yet she’s completely serious about food. my kind of lady. my favorite portion of the book has got to be the discussion on the title of her masterpiece mastering the art of french cooking. why? because julia includes titles that were...

wednesday night's state dinner menu.
the obama’s hosted the chinese president at a state dinner on wednesday evening. and by my estimation, he’s a lucky fellow…the menu sounds delicious AND barbra streisand was supposedly attending. amazing.

i've said it once, and i'll say it again...
…the internet truly is filled with magic. take, for example, cooked books. definitely on my list of blogs-i-wish-i-had-known-about-long-ago, it’s written by class-act librarian rebecca federman. she works at the new york public library and she has the keys to anything you’d ever want to know about culinary research - and much more (like amazing, historical menus.) seriously,...

having signed up for an upcoming butchery class, i now find myself completely obsessed with the portland meat collective. not only do they offer (interesting & awesome) butchery classes, but they also have a MEAT CSA in the works. MEAT CSA? seriously? the ins & outs of that kind of blow my mind. here’s to meat!

ellen tarlin’s post on slate.com really got me to thinking. it’s always a bit scary to compare yourself to others - especially when it comes to the way you choose to spend your money, especially when it comes to what you choose to put in your mouth. say the wrong thing - or say the right thing the wrong way - and you come across as either completely disconnected from the...

we’ve got an assortment of positions open at my bakery. everything from our shipping department to front of house staff. it’s sad for me to see some really great employees leaving the nest, but at the same time, i totally understand that often my little bakery is just a stop along a life path - and not necessarily a destination. with that said, it’s always nice to have job...

people suggesting i take part in the abomination that is cupcake wars. you know, because cupcake wars is “everywhere” right now.
i won’t put bacon in my baked goods. period. stop asking. and i don’t need to be on cupcake...

as a bakery owner with plans for expansion in the next few months (more on that later), this frank bruni story in the ny times fascinates me:

i don’t know anyone who hasn’t made some kind of wacky resolution for the new year. and most of them involve food. i mean, seriously, if i look at facebook one more time and see yet another friend who has an update detailing their decision to entirely cut out carbs or to only eat like a cave man, i’m probably going to go crazy. and then ship them a loaf of bread. or some...

interesting piece in yesterday’s ny times about food addiction. whether you believe it’s possible or not to be addicted to high fat, sugary, salty foods - this piece will give you something to think about. and in addition to food-for-thought, there are two very clever words tossed around: obesigenic and hyperpalatable. fancy!

My Dad once dumped a bowl of oatmeal on top of my head. I don’t actually remember the event but heard the story so many times that I can imagine it clearly. I was about 1-1/2 years old and sitting in a high chair, my Dad trying to feed me. My parents said I was a fussy eater — little did they know…
